Ditch The Shade - Nail Industrial Lighting

After a long day of work, I pour myself a glass (or two) of Pinot Noir and grab my iPad for a little furniture browsing and decor pinning. My current focus? Lighting.

I have always been particular with lights due to my huge allergy to lampshades. I find most to be an unnecessary eyesore and a bit old fashion. Sadly, though, shades do come with the lighting territory. To no surprise, I've been on the search for the perfect pendant shade for my bedroom and have found nothing! Fed up and in dire need of more artificial light, I naturally decided to go shadeless. In turn, allowing a thick white cord with a large cylindrical bulb to hover above my bedside table. When one of my best friends saw my lighting situation she had a few questions... My favorite:

"I love you, but what's going on with that hobo light?"

Dying of laughter, I reached for my iPad and introduced her to my favorite trend of shadeless lights.

The key to pulling off this industrial look (and not looking poor) lies in the bulbs. Make sure to choose an intricate bulb, a corner store's 60 watt standard one will not do. Luckily, these days your choices are endless! Everything from filament bulbs to silver dipped are readily available. For a bold look, opt for an over-sized diamond shaped bulb by Eric Therner.

To allow the bulb to shine, keep the cord a neutral color. Try black or grey for a little contrast or white for a more subtle look. With so many options, you really can't go wrong...just choose your vice and hang on!

Find everything you need to pull off this look at West Elm, CB2, or Ikea.
